Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common—but often misunderstood—hormonal disorders affecting people of reproductive age. Yet, despite its prevalence, millions are misdiagnosed, underdiagnosed, or left navigating this condition without proper support or education.
That’s why PCOS Awareness Month—celebrated every September—is so important.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a complex hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries work. Common symptoms include:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Excess androgen (male hormone) levels
- Polycystic ovaries seen on an ultrasound
- Weight fluctuations, acne, excess hair growth, and fertility challenges
But PCOS is more than a reproductive issue—it can affect metabolic health, mental health, and overall quality of life.
Why Awareness Matters
- 1 in 10 people assigned female at birth are estimated to have PCOS.
- Many live with symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis.
- PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility, yet it is manageable with the right support.
- There is no cure, but early intervention, lifestyle changes, and medical treatment can significantly improve symptoms and outcomes.
This Month, We Raise Our Voices for…
- Early diagnosis and better education
- Equitable care for people with PCOS globally, especially in underserved communities
- Body-positive, stigma-free conversations about hormonal health
- Mental health support, because PCOS doesn’t just affect the body—it affects the mind and soul
How You Can Participate
- Wear teal, the official awareness color for PCOS.
- Share your PCOS story (or amplify someone else’s) on social media.
- Use hashtags like #PCOSAwarenessMonth, #PCOSWarrior, and #FertilityConversations to spread the message.
- Learn more, and encourage others to seek hormonal health checks, especially if symptoms are present.
From Our Founder
“Too many people silently suffer with PCOS, blamed for their symptoms, or told to ‘just lose weight’ without deeper investigation. PCOS Awareness Month is about changing that. It’s about empathy, education, and empowering people to take charge of their health.”
— Ola Taiwo, Founder of Fertility Conversations
