As part of our awareness campaign, we have been visiting secondary schools in Nigeria to educate the students and raise awareness about period poverty.
Here in this article, we share details of our visits to Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School in Lagos and Lagos City College.
Our Period Poverty awareness was successful in both schools. The principals informed us that our visit was really important because girls need to learn how to be hygienic not only when they are on their period but generally in their daily activities.
As part of the Period poverty awareness campaign, we educated the students on the importance of staying hygienic while on their period and also advised them to communicate effectively and communicate to their parents, guardians and teachers if they experience severe pain during their period. This way; they can ensure the students get required medical care and assistance.
The students were so happy to learn about period poverty and how to stay hygienic while on their period. We discussed about how period poverty affects Africa and other continents globally and how it is affecting us here in Nigeria. The students learnt about period poverty consequences and how it can lead to future INFERTILITY and other birth complications.

We also got to share our experiences, answered related questions from the students and reminded students that there is no stigma with periods and no reason for them to be ashamed.
The experience was encouraging and impactful that we hope will make a difference in the lives of many young girls. At the end of our talk, we gave every student a pack of sanitary pads as part of the awareness campaigns. They were happy to receive their sanitary pads and took pictures showing off this sanitary pads.
We plan to keep visiting more schools across the country and will welcome sponsorships from individuals and organizations to help purchase more sanitary pads and to reach more students.
